How to Measure a Door
Wondering how to measure door size to ensure you select a front door that fits your door frame? We’ve got you covered with this five-step DIY door measurement guide.
Learning how to measure a door opening is essential when ordering your new Stegbar door. Taking accurate measurements will help you select the right front door from a range of front door sizes to ensure a perfect fit. Getting that right is crucial for both aesthetics and functionality.
Here’s a step-by-step door measurement guide to help you measure for your new door. |
What you need
- Measuring tape
- Pencil and paper
- Level
- Step ladder (if necessary)
Step 1: Measure the Width of the Door Opening
Measure Three Points:
Use your measuring tape to measure the width of the door opening at three points: the top, middle and bottom. This helps account for any irregularities in the frame.
Record the Smallest Measurement:
Write down the smallest of these three measurements. This will be the width of your new door.
Step 2: Measure the Height of the Door Opening
Measure Left and Right Sides:
Measure the height of the door opening from the floor to the top of the frame on both the left and right sides.
Record the Shortest Measurement:
Write down the shortest measurement. This will be the height of your new door.
Step 3: Measure the Thickness of the Door Jamb
Measure the Door Jamb:
Measure the thickness of the door jamb (this is the frame into which the door fits). This is typically 35mm to 45mm, but it’s important to confirm.
Step 4: Check for Squareness
Take Diagonal Measurements:
Measure the diagonals of the door opening from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, and from the top right corner to the bottom left corner.
Compare Measurements:
If the measurements are equal, the opening is square. If not, you may need to make adjustments during installation.
Step 5: Account for Flooring
Consider Flooring Height:
If you plan to install new flooring, account for its height in your measurements. This ensures the door will clear the floor when open.
Door Measurement Tips
Double-Check Your Measurements: Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.
Use a Level: Ensure your measurements are level and plumb for the best fit.
Record Measurements Clearly: Write down your measurements clearly and label them to avoid confusion.
By following this door frame measurement guide, you’ll ensure your new front door will fit perfectly to enhance the appearance and security of your home. And remember — accurate measurements are the foundation of a successful door installation, so take your time and measure carefully.
